Roundwound Bass Strings and an Upgraded Bronco
I have had my P-Bass strung up with flatwound strings for the last few years. I like the duller tone that they have in some ways I think they make the bass tick out more as my sound is not competing in the same range as the guitars. A few months ago I played Quentin's Jazz Bass for about 45 minutes and the roundwounds were eating on my plucking fingers pretty good. I should have catalogued that experience in my mind.
Last week I got in a new pickguard and pickup, a Bass Lines Quarter Pounder single coil, for my old Squier Bronco. I am really pleased with the sound of it and I played it at Crosstown Station last night. The damn thing still has roundwounds on it and after our 70 minute set I have these gigantic blisters on my index and middle fingers on my right hand. It is annoying to do anything right now. It's not overtly painful but just freaking weird feeling.
It was a lot of fun playing the Bronco again. It has a short scale, 30" as opposed to 34", so it's easy to just fly around on it. As an added plus, it looks a little more correct on my small frame. Maybe I'll get an SVT Micro and feel like a giant when I play. I could also only buy the little bottles of beer, like the Coronitas, and as long as I stayed away from Jon, Quentin or Ryan I might appear huge!
