Stuff I've been listening to.

I went to Music Exchange and bought me some vinyl!

The only new release I picked up the new Bright Eyes album I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning. The first time I hear Bright Eyes I didnt' like it but his warbly voice has definitely grown on me. The songs sound good an earthy. The recording sounds very accurate... not in the clinical sense but like your in the room listening. This is also the first 180g record I've bought. Definitely a big difference in quality of standard vinyl. I'm going to be buying a better turntable soon!

"Watching the Detectives" is one of my favorite Elvis Costello songs ever so I picked up a first pressing of My Aim is True. I don't know if the first pressing means much... but the people at music exchange stuck a sticker on it ;)

The re-press of Finish Your Popcorn by F.Y.P. was also there and screamed at me to take it home and hate the govenment. It was also only $3.95! I couldn't resist that.

While not in anyway new I've been listeing to Mule Variations by Tom Waits a lot. The sounds he gets are just amazing! The distortion doesn't sound cheesy and an afterthought just a smooth part of the performance. The songs are so dense with hidden noises that I still find something new everytime I listen to it.

I've been listening to a bunch of the mp3s on John Vanderslice's site. Great songs, exceptional engineering. I need to actually buy some stuff but I can't ever find it in stores. I could order some CDs I guess...

I downloaded Castaways and Cutouts by The Decemberists from eMusic. Great Beatlesesque pop songs. I'm really a fan of the hard panned drums that the Beatles did and the Decemberists do it well and "A Cautionary Song." This is no rip-off like that Jet song that's been on the radio lately. The Jet song just seems like a blatant rip off, The Decemberists sound like genuine inspiration.

I've been in the lab and the warehouse at work a lot this past couple of week and we generally have on the alternative station here in K.C. I just want to say that no matter how many songs or how often they play them I am not going to like Modest Mouse. I didn't like "Cowboy Dan." I didn't like "The Never Ending Math Equation." I do not like them. The songs... err lyrics... are kind of cute at times but otherwise still do nothing for me.
