The Jon Stubblefield Band?
I don't know what the name is or maybe it's just Jon Stubblefield with accompaniment... eitherway... It's going good. We had our second practice today and I setup some mics to grab a quick demo for us to all listen to to be familiar with. It actually sounds pretty fitting based on the material.
All the mics went into my Behringer ADA8000. Yeah yeah... it's Behringer but it's got the Alesis convertors in it the mic preamps don'e outright suck. They are boring but don't suck. They are good utility preamps. Anyway... the setup was barebones. On drums I had an Oktava MK-012 centered above the kit and an ATM25 outside the kick. The bass had a Nady DM-80, which SUCKS for kick drums (it's "intended" purpose) but sounds perfect on an Ampeg cabinet. The guitar was a Nady DM-70, again which sucks as a snare/tom mic but works good on guitar. An SM-57 on the vocals rounded it out. It's nice that we were really just practicing but had "tape" running the whole time.
The sound is a little lo-fi, I never like mono drums, but very good feeling. Other than the lack of bass guitar in the rough mixes the only thing I would change would be the vocal mic. Maybe just putting through a different preamp would have helped but it's a little too midrangey.
It's really weird to mix mono. It's a lot harder to keep things in their space. There was really nothing good to pan out, and yes, I did try the bass on one side and the guitar on the other. I'm almost tempted to start my mixes mono from now on and after I get it nailed down then start the panning.
